Insect fossils πŸœπŸ•·

You could use the toy insects from your treasure hunt to make exciting fossils. My daughter really loved this activity and kept asking to do more. Plus salt dough is easy to make and lots of fun to play with. Just leave yourself lots of time to make these, as they can take a while to harden in the oven.

What you’ll need:

  • Toy insects (or something that will make a good imprint)
  • Salt dough (250g plain flour, 125g salt, 125ml water, extra flour for working)
  • Mixing bowl, rolling pin, greaseproof lined baking tray

What to do:

  1. Mix the flour and salt in a mixing bowl then add the water and stir well.
  2. Knead the dough for about 5 minutes to form a ball.
  3. Place the dough on a floured work surface.
  4. Break off a small handful of the dough and roll out till about 1-2cm thick.
  5. Press a toy insect into the flattened dough, then remove the insect.
  6. Place all your β€˜fossils’ on the greaseproof lined baking tray.
  7. Bake in the oven at around 120 degrees for approximately 2 hours (depending on the thickness of the dough) until the fossils are completely hard.

Hints and tips:

– Make sure the worktop and rolling pin are covered with flour to prevent sticking.

– If your dough is too brittle the new add more water, if it’s too sticky add more flour or knead more.

– Although fossils technically don’t have any colour, my daughter wanted to paint hers, so I let her once they were cooled.
