I wanted to teach my daughter about emergency vehicles so we made a fire engine for her peppa pig toy and a police car for suzi sheep.
You will need:
- An empty toilet roll
- An empty small box (a multi pack cereal box was perfect)
- Bottle tops x8 for wheels (or even better tops to baby food pouches if you have any)
- Match sticks and blue tack
- White and black paint
- Red and white paper
- Colouring pens
- Scissors, glue and sellotape
- Yellow pipe cleaner and red lollipop sticks x3 (optional)
What to do:
- Cut out a rectangle in the top of the toilet roll, leaving some behind to fold to make the windscreen
- Paint the toilet roll white for the police car and leave to dry
- Paint the bottle tops black for the wheels and leave to dry
- Cut one lollipop stick into small pieces and stick at regular intervals to the other 2 lollipop sticks to make a ladder
- Twirl the pipe cleaner round a finger to make the hose
- Cut out a small rectangle in the top of the cereal box then cover in red paper
- Write and cut out the letters for fire on the white paper, stick to the sides of the red box
- Add a window to the from of the fire engine using black paper or pens
- Colour a small rectangular piece of card blue and fold to make the siren
- Once the toilet roll is dry pierce or cut 4 holes to make the wheel arch, do the same for the fire engine
- Push the match stick through the holes and attach wheels using blue tack
- Decorate as wish
Hint and tips:
– This is quite a complicated activity for a toddler so I tried to let her do as much as possible I.e. the painting, glueing and decorating. While I did the tricky parts I.e. cutting and piercing.
– You could improve the police car by drawing round the ends of the toilet roll, painting them and attaching them to the ends of the toilet roll via tabs and double sided tape
– Although blue tack holds the wheels on its not the most robust method (especially when played with by a toddler). A glue gun might be more secure or finding some way of making holes in the bottle tops.
